SLM universal drive
The SLM universal drive or universal drive Winterthur is a drive for electric locomotives invented by the Swiss engineer Jakob Buchli . After developing the successful Buchli drive , Buchli switched from BBC to SLM in 1924 , where he designed the universal drive .
construction
The SLM universal drive is characterized by the double gear transmission, which means that the transmission ratio can be freely selected within a wide range. Two coaxially opposed motors are arranged in the locomotive body above the respective drive axle . The gear set is driven via a double gear ratio, the second gear wheel being connected to the center of the drive gear set with a universal joint coupling.
probation
The compact and relatively light drive ensures small unsprung masses. However, it is difficult to access for maintenance and repair work. The gears did not always withstand the stresses and were quickly worn out. The locomotives with SLM universal drive were unpopular with the staff because of their howling gears.
With the advent of bogie locomotives without running axles since the 1940s, the SLM universal drive lost its justification.
