SMSS J215728.21-360215.1 , (abbreviation SMSS J2157 and J2157-3602 ) is a luminous-intensive quasar .

With a redshift of 4.75, its distance (depending on the calculation: including or excluding the expansion of the universe ) corresponds to between 125 billion and 250 billion light years from Earth . It was discovered in May 2018 using the SkyMapper telescope at the Siding Spring Observatory at the Australian National University . It has a bolometric luminosity of 6.95 × 10 14 L☉ (2.66 × 10 41 watts ).

In July 2020, a study by the Royal Astronomical Society reported that the supermassive black hole associated with the quasar is 34 billion solar masses .
