SM UB 88

SM UB 88 one was submarine of U-boat class UB III of the Imperial Navy . Launched on December 11, 1917 at AG Vulcan Hamburg , it was delivered on January 26, 1918. The commandant was Lieutenant Johannes Ries (until February 15, 1918), and from February 16, 1918 Lieutenant Reinhard von Rabenau . After various breakdowns, the boat was not ready for the front until June 4, 1918 and was transferred to Flanders to the 1st submarine flotilla (from October 1918 to the 2nd flotilla). After five missions on the English east coast, in the English Channel and in the Biscay , in which 13 or 14 ships with about 32,000 tons were sunk and two damaged, it was interned in Harwich . On November 26, 1918 (according to other information on March 13, 1919) UB 88 was awarded to the USA as spoils of war and in April 1919 was transferred there accompanied by a tender .

In August 1919 it crossed the Panama Canal . By November 1919, around 400,000 people visited the boat in 25 cities (including Memphis (Tennessee) on the Mississippi River ). There the boat was used to advertise the subscription of US war bonds . On January 3, 1921, UB 88 was sunk near San Pedro (Los Angeles) by shell fire from the destroyer Wickes for training purposes. On May 9, 2003, the wreck was located by a sport fisherman using sonar at a depth of 30 to 40 meters in the Catalina Channel . After that there were efforts to raise the boat for museum purposes. It is a destination for wreck divers today.
