The A1AA1A 68000 series diesel-electric locomotives were built for the SNCF between 1963 and 1968 .

These are mainline diesel locomotives for passenger and freight trains with the wheel arrangement (A1A) '(A1A)'. Each bogie has two traction motors, one for each drive axle. The middle (running) axles of the three-axle bogies are not driven. By changing the springs on the running axles, a friction weight of 72 or 80 tons can be produced, i.e. a maximum axle pressure of the driving axles of 18 or 20 tons. With this unusual design, the axle pressure can either be reduced for routes with a lighter superstructure or the friction of the drive wheels can be increased. The 68000 is equipped with a steam generator for train heating.

The substructure types 68000 and 68500 differ only in the diesel engines. There are 12-cylinder engines with an output of 1985 kW, which come from Sulzer (type 12 LDA 24) in the 68000 to 68085 machines and SACM's 68501 to 68540 (type AGO DSHR 2700). The Sulzer diesel engine has a bore of 230 mm and a stroke of 220 mm. Over time, the engines of several machines were swapped and the locomotives were renumbered from 68500 to 68000 (and vice versa) if necessary. Former 68500 were machines 68005 and 68082 to 68085, former 68000 were machines 68530 to 68540.

The machines were ordered on June 7, 1961. The first locomotive was handed over to the Chalindrey depot on December 13, 1963 and was in regular service from 1964. By 1968, 110 machines were built in two series.

The locomotives of the 68000 and 68500 series are capable of multiple traction and for this purpose can be coupled with each other and with the BB 67000 and BB 67200 series.

With the appearance of stronger locomotives such as the BB 67300 , BB 67400 and CC 72000 , the series was pushed out of high-quality traffic as early as 1967. From then on, it only pulled steam-heated passenger trains and in the mid-1970s migrated entirely to freight transport. Between 1977 and 1982, during the main inspections, the driver's cabs were converted and the steam boilers removed and replaced with ballast weights.

Due to a lack of suitable locomotives, A1AA1A 68000 returned briefly to high-quality traffic in 1995/96. In double traction with BB 67300 and BB 67400 in front of passenger trains, they replaced turbotrains on the Paris-Cherbourg route .

In the last few years the locomotives were only used in freight transport and in front of construction trains. Except for the 68081, the 68506 and the 68540, all have now been taken out of service.

Remarks

  1. The 68005 was delivered with a SACM motor and initially the 68501
