The SPS - Smart Production Solutions - formerly SPS IPC Drives - is one of the largest international exhibitions for electric automation technology . The fair offers a complete overview of the market and shows all components through to complete systems and integrated automation solutions. The SPS takes place annually on the exhibition grounds of the Nuremberg Exhibition Center .

For 29 issues, the name of the trade fair is made up of the three main themes: PLC (programmable logic controllers), IPC (industrial PC) and drives (electrical drives). In addition to these three original components, the trade fair now shows an even wider range of solutions for future-oriented automation . The technical progress of recent years and the digital transformation of the industry have been reflected at the fair for some time.

The fair took place for the first time in 1990 in Sindelfingen, back then on an exhibition area of 3,500 m². It has been taking place in Nuremberg since 1997. In 1997 with an exhibition area of 14,200 m² and in 1998 with an exhibition area of 24,000 m².

The hall occupancy of the SPS is also based on these main topics.

Software & IT in manufacturing

In manufacturing , the topic of Industry 4.0 is developing from a vision to a reality. In the age of digital transformation , the two industries IT and automation are growing ever closer together - which is also reflected in the PLC. In addition to topic-related special show areas and lectures, exhibitors will also be showing products and application examples for digital transformation.

The topic of cyber security is also taken up by numerous providers. At their booths they will clearly demonstrate how companies can protect themselves from cyber attacks.

Exhibition forums and joint stands

Product presentation at the Automation meets IT forum

The SPS offers four trade fair forums. Subject- specific lectures and panel discussions take place at the forums of the ZVEI and VDMA associations .

The joint stand “Sensors and Measurement” shows solutions in the field of sensor and measurement technology. At the joint stand "Automation meets IT", the focus is on digital transformation.

Automation hackathon

A hackathon was held for the first time in 2018 to accompany the automation trade fair, organized by Mesago Messe Frankfurt GmbH in cooperation with the Vogel Communications Group. The aim is to create new business models with the help of new technologies such as cloud, machine learning , big data , artificial intelligence or IoT . Specifically, among other things, options were sought to use blockchain technology in the area of digital networking of machines. Seven start-ups worked together with seven well-known automation specialists who gave the young founders their tasks and stood by them for 48 hours. The participating industrial partners were Balluff, Bosch Rexroth, Phoenix Contact, Sick, Siemens, Turck and Wago. The three best ideas were rewarded with prize money totaling 15,000 euros.
