The STERIS plc is a British company for sterilization , infection prevention , disinfection and decontamination , based in Derby and operational headquarters in Mentor in the State of Ohio . The main customers are hospitals, scientific research institutes and companies in the pharmaceutical industry .
The company's shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange .
history
The company was founded as Innovative Medical Technologies in 1985 and renamed Steris Corporation in 1987. At that time the company had five employees. The company's roots go back to the American Sterilizer Company, founded in 1894 .
In 1992 the company went public on the NASDAQ , in 1998 the company switched to the New York Stock Exchange .
The history of Steris is mainly shaped by company takeovers. In 1996, Steris took over the Amsco brand and the companies Surgicot, and Calgon Vestal Laboratories, in 1997 Isomedix Services and Joslyn Sterilizer Corporation, in 1998 then Detach, Hausted and Royal Sterilization Systems, and in 1999 Quality Sterilization Services and FoodLabs. With the acquisition of US Endoscopy, Spectrum Surgical Instrument Corporation and Total Repair Express, the number of employees at Steris had grown to 5,000 people in 60 countries in 2012.
In 2014, Steris took over Integrated Medical Systems International, Eschmann Equipment, Florida Surgical Repair and Life Systems.
October 2014 Steris announced that its British rival Synergy Health for 1.9 billion US dollars to take over and is based in the United Kingdom to lay. The merger will create a company with 14,000 employees worldwide and annual sales of $ 2.6 billion. On May 28, 2015, the US regulator FTC stopped the takeover. Steris successfully counteracted this and announced on September 24, 2015 that it would proceed with the merger. On November 2, 2015, Steris completed the acquisition and relocation to the UK.
In November 2018, Steris announced that it would move its headquarters from the United Kingdom to Ireland . The reasons are Brexit and lower taxes in Ireland.
