The Olbernhau sports association was formed in 1914 from a merger between Sturm Olbernhau and VfB Olbernhau . On a sporting level, the Erzgebirge did not play a role in Saxon football until 1945, and any participation in the finals for the Central German Championship or Gauliga Sachsen did not take place.

In 1945 the club was dissolved and re-established as SG Olbernhau . The loose sports group acted in the 1948/49 season for one season in the Landesliga Sachsen ( SBZ ), but, in contrast to the former Gauligists of SG Hartha and SG Mittweida, had no realistic chance of promotion to the newly founded DS league .

Subsequently, with the entry of various sponsoring companies , the SG was initially renamed Konsum Olbernhau and Empor Olbernhau , from 1953 to Stahl Olbernhau . In terms of sport, the Saxons played no role in higher-class GDR football. In 1957 Stahl Olbernhau rose together with Wismut Rodewisch in the then fourth-class district league Karl-Marx-Stadt , which was held with brief interruptions until 1984.

In 1991 the club returned to its historical name SV Olbernhau . The SVO will initially operate exclusively in the Ore Mountains local area until 2018. After being promoted from the state class West, the club played in the Sachsenliga (6th league) for the first time after German reunification from the 2018/19 season . After only nine match days, the club was deregistered from match operations. For the 2019/20 season, the club started again in the Sparkassen-Kreisliga Erzgebirge Staffel Ost.
