The idea

The gallery is committed to cross-border cultural exchange between Saarland , Luxembourg , the German-speaking community of Belgium and France . In this way, a structural model of European art exchange was created, in which Berlin should act as a hub for creative work. The founding idea thus combines civic engagement and lively cultural federalism with a European vision.

Since the exhibition began in September 2004, works by artists from the Czech Republic , France, Luxembourg, Belgium and of course from Saarland and Berlin have been shown.

The founding story

After the opening of the new building for the representation of the Saarland at the federal government in Berlin in January 2001, the then representative of the Saarland, State Secretary Monika Beck , developed the concept of presenting Saarland, Lorraine and Luxembourg art in Berlin. The visual arts, new media, literature, music and film should bear witness to the inspired creativity of young artists in the region. It soon became apparent that the premises of the Saarland state representation would not be sufficient for this due to the "normal" use for conferences and meetings. In 2004 the rented rooms in the Palais am Festungsgraben could therefore be opened. In 2016 the gallery moved into new rooms near Checkpoint Charlie.

Initially still responsible for the representation of the Saarland at the federal level, in December 2005 the gallery was sponsored by the non-profit association “Saarländische Galerie - European Art Forum e. V. “about. In this way, the presentation of the cultural work was converted into civic engagement , a possible state influence excluded and at the same time the support of the Saarland state government continued on the basis of the project funding.
