The Saarländische Volkszeitung was the organ of the Christian People's Party of the Saarland (CVP). The daily newspaper appeared in Saarland from 1946 to 1958 .

The Saarländische Volkszeitung first appeared on June 22, 1946 and was the official party organ of the CVP. It was the successor to the Saarbrücker Landeszeitung , the party organ of the previous Saarland Center Party until 1935. It had the highest circulation of the newspapers of the parties allowed under the Saar Statute . The initial print run of 90,000 copies, however, shrank to 30,000 copies (1955) during the more than ten years of publication, of which 28,000 were obtained by subscription. The first editor-in-chief was Johannes Hoffmann himself, who had also directed the previous paper. Together with Franz Singer , the second chairman of the CVP, he also owned the newspaper, which was published by a GmbH. The proceeds from the sale were used to fund the party.

Until December 1948, the newspaper appeared once a week with a length of four pages. From then on it was changed to a daily publication and the volume grew. Four pages were the basic paper, which comprised two pages of political and one page of business news. The fourth page contained advertisements. There were also local editions for Saarbrücken-Stadt, Saarbrücken Land West, Merzig-Wadern, St. Wendel, Neunkirchen, Ottweiler, Homburg, St. Ingbert and Saarbrücken Land Ost. These included a page of local news, a page of surveys and advertisements from the districts. Later the newspaper grew to eight pages (Mondays to Thursdays), ten pages (Fridays) and twelve pages (Saturdays). In 1954 the number of pages was increased to a uniform 12.

In terms of content, she was on the party line, that is, on the side of publisher Johannes Hoffmann, a vehement advocate of the Saar Statute, a Saarland independent of the Federal Republic of Germany and France. At the same time it was a government organ from 1947 to 1955 during Hoffmann's tenure as Saarland Prime Minister . In 1952, the Saarländische Volkszeitung printed an interview with the Trier vicar general Peter Weins , which had previously appeared in the Saarbrücker Zeitung and was recognized as a forgery beforehand.

Differing opinions were not tolerated in the editorial team. The editor-in-chief changed frequently because of internal disputes in the party leadership or because of criticism of the government.

During the voting campaign, the number of readers fell significantly, probably by more than half. The predominantly Catholic readers went to the pro-German latest news , the party newspaper of the Saar CDU . The last edition appeared on July 31, 1958. The paper then merged with its former competitor to form the Saarbrücker Landeszeitung.
