The Sabah Art Gallery ( mal. Balai Seni Lukis Sabah ) is an art museum in the state of Sabah in Malaysia . It is located on 17 hectares in the Layang district of Kota Kinabalu near Jalan Penampang.

The purpose of the art gallery is to collect, store, preserve and interpret both domestic and foreign works of art.

history

The museum was founded in 1984 by the artist Yaman Mus. As a state institution, the art gallery was placed under the administration of the Sabah Sports and Cultural Board and housed as a "temporary solution" on the first floor of the Science Center of the Sabah Museum . The art gallery had 1,100 m² of space there for exhibition, storage of art objects and administration.

The "temporary solution" existed for almost 25 years before the groundbreaking ceremony for a new four-story building in the avant-garde style on January 8, 2010 on a 1.74 hectare site in the Luyang district. As renovation work began on the Sabah Museum at the same time, the Sabah Art Gallery was relocated to Wisma Budaya on Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman for a short transition period .

building

The shape of the octagonal building, which tapers downwards, is said to be reminiscent of a bahuyun , a traditional basket that the Kadazandusun used to weave from bamboo leaves. The octagonal design allows an optimal presentation of the works of art.

More than 3,000 square meters of space are available at the new location for the collection, which has grown to 2,000 works of art, worth 14 million ringgits.

The building is equipped as an energy-saving house and uses renewable energies and rainwater for automatic lighting and air conditioning. The Sabah State Gallery received the "Green Building Index" certificate on June 29, 2012. The Sabah Art Gallery claims to be the first green building in the state. The construction costs totaled 16 million ringgit, around 4 million EUR.
