The Sabah Museum ( mal. Muzium Sabah ) is the museum of the state of Sabah in Malaysia . It sits on 17 acres on the Bukit Istana Lama hill in the town of Kota Kinabalu . The museum complex not only houses the actual museum, but also an ethnobotanical garden, a zoo and an open-air museum .
The departments cover the subjects of Islamic Civilization , Archeology and History , Natural History , and Ceramic and Brass Objects . The aim of the museum is to collect, preserve, conserve and document ethnographic, archaeological, historical, numismatic, art historical, botanical, zoological and mineralogical collections from Sabah and to carry out research on important and interesting topics from history, culture and the Social and Natural History of Sabah.

The museum was opened on July 15, 1965 at the instigation of the Sabah Society in a department store on Gaya Street, Kota Kinabalu and is the successor to the previous British North Borneo Museum in Sandakan. The collection of George Cathcart Woolley , bequeathed to the state of Sabah in his will , consisting of photographs, diaries and numerous utensils , formed the basis of the museum. The museum's first curator was EJ Berwick. In 1981 it came under the supervision of the Ministry of Community Facilities and from 1982 the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport was responsible.
In 1984 it moved to its current location - the former location of the seat of government and then the location of Dewan Undangan Negeri Sabah . The opening ceremony on April 11, 1984 was held in the presence of Yang di-Pertuan Agong .
The " Sabah Art Gallery ", which resided in the museum's rooms until 2012 , moved to its own building near Jalan Penampang in the Luyang district in early 2013.
