history

Nicolino di Camillo, who comes from Chieti , came to Bavaria with the American army in 1946 , where he worked as a kitchen helper. Together with his future wife, Janine Schmitt from Würzburg, he opened Germany's first pizzeria on March 24, 1952 in Elefantengasse in Würzburg as a “beer and food business” with the additional name “Capri”. They had “Sabbie di Capri” written on the outer wall, which means something like sand from Capri and was intended as a linguistic link between the Italian island of Capri and Würzburger Sanderstraße. At first almost only American GIs are said to have come, but over time the German neighbors became interested in the unknown and at the time not yet cheap food. In 1956 the operating couple set up a replica of the Blue Grotto , a cave on the island of Capri, in the basement . The popular cellar soon gave rise to the name of the restaurant, “Capri and Blue Grotto”, which is still valid today.
