Sabellida is the name of a suborder of mostly sessile and tube -building polychaeta living as a filter feeder in the order Canalipalpata and the subclass Palpata , which can be found in seas worldwide.

features

The Sabellida do not have a buccal organ . The prostomium is fused with the peristomium and bears a ring of feather-like tentacles which - with the exception of the Siboglinidae , which have no mouth at all - are arranged in a funnel-shaped manner around the mouth on two semicircular tentacle carriers that are homologous to the palps. Two rows of filaments (pinnulae or feathers) run on each feather-shaped tentacle. The Sabellida live in parchment-like living tubes, which they cement together with their slime from sand, shell fragments and similar hard particles.

Distribution, habitat, way of life and example species

The Sabellida are widespread in seas around the world and live on both soft and hard substrates, where they build their living tubes and live as sessile animals . They feed the filter feeders of detritus and phytoplankton , which they catch with their feather-like tentacles from the sea currents and transported through lashes activity on the palps to mouth.

The Sabellidae include featherworms (Sabellidae), sand corals (Sabellariidae) and tube worms (Serpulidae). Common species include the giant feather worm ( Eudistylia polymorpha ), the peacock feather worm ( Sabella pavonina ), the European fan worm ( Sabella spallanzanii ) and the Christmas tree worm ( Spirobranchus giganteus ).
