Canalipalpata is the name of an order of mostly sessile and tube -building polychaeta (polychaeta) living as filter feeders in the subclass Palpata , which can be found in seas worldwide.

features

The Canalipalpata have neither teeth nor jaws. On their palps , which are sitting on the prostomium , there is an eyelash groove with numerous cilia , with which small food particles, mostly detritus , caught from the water are transported to the mouth. The palps have a U-shaped cross-section through the eyelash groove. Only in the Siboglinidae , which feed themselves exclusively through a symbiosis with bacteria and therefore do not need any outside nutrition, these eyelash grooves are missing.

Distribution, habitat and way of life

The Spionida are widespread in oceans worldwide and live on both soft and hard substrates, where they build their living tubes and thus live as sessile animals . They feed the filter feeders of detritus and phytoplankton , which they catch with their palps of the ocean current and transport with eyelashes activity on the palps to mouth.

Systematics

According to the systematics according to Rouse & Fauchald from 1998 , the order Canalipalpata and its sister group , the Aciculata , form the subclass Palpata .

According to this system, the order Canalipalpata includes the suborders Sabellida , Terebellida and Spionida with the following families :
