Sabine Baumgärtner

Sabine Baumgärtner , née Baumann, (born November 10, 1929 - † October 20, 2018 ) was a German art historian .

Life

She studied art history and German at the University of Leipzig , where she received her diploma and received her doctorate in 1958 under Heinz Ladendorf . From 1956 to 1959 she was a research assistant at the Kunstgewerbemuseum in East Berlin. At the beginning of 1959 she became custodian and deputy director there, and in summer 1959 director of the museum, succeeding Martin Klar . In December 1961, she fled with her husband to the Federal Republic of Germany, where she worked as a freelance art historian. In Munich she was able to work on 19th century German lacquer work with a grant from the DFG. She published mainly in the field of the history of glass .

She was married to the Germanist Klaus Baumgärtner (1931–2003), with him she belonged to Uwe Johnson's circle of friends .
