Sabino Augusto Montanaro

Sabino Augusto Montanaro (born July 30, 1922 in Asunción ; † September 10, 2011 ibid) was a Paraguayan lawyer and politician of the Partido Colorado .

Life

After attending school, Montanaro studied law and then worked as a lawyer. He later became involved as a politician in the Partido Colorado and in 1966 by the then dictatorial ruling President Alfredo Stroessner appointed interior minister of Paraguay. He held this office until Stroessner was overthrown by General Andrés Rodríguez on February 3, 1989. He was excommunicated in 1971 by Archbishop Ismael Rolón SDB of Asunción because he abducted, tortured and murdered opposition members .

After Stroessner was disempowered, he went into exile like him and lived in Honduras for 20 years . After he returned to Paraguay on May 1, 2009, he was arrested and charged with an arrest warrant for the kidnapping and enforced disappearance of opposition activists. Because of his age and health, he was put under house arrest . Montanaro died of complications from pneumonia .
