The sucrose intolerance (synonym sucrase-isomaltase deficiency or sucrose-isomaltose malabsorption) belongs to the Food intolerances and is a mostly autosomal recessive metabolic disorder in which the table sugar ( sucrose ) is not tolerated. After ingesting sucrose, stomach pain, cramps, diarrhea and vomiting occur .

to form

A distinction is made between:

  • the primary form of sucrose-isomaltose malabsorption as a rare, hereditary metabolic disease that manifests itself in toddlers from around the age of six months, since sugar is first absorbed through complementary food. There is a sucrase-isomaltase deficiency . Sucrose (table sugar) cannot be broken down into glucose in the small intestine, or only slightly. The sucrose therefore increasingly reaches the large intestine, which can lead to abdominal pain , abdominal cramps and diarrhea. The frequency is between 0.2% and 0.05%.

diagnosis

Sucrose intolerance can currently only be diagnosed with certainty with a small intestine biopsy with determination of the sucrase-isomaltase activity in the tissue of the small intestine. There are also other test methods such as the hydrogen breath test after taking disaccharides, but these are not proof of the presence of sucrose intolerance.

therapy

People are on a low-sucrose diet. Table sugar is replaced by grape sugar , milk sugar and fructose .
