They occur worldwide with approx. 1,500 kinds , of which over 1,000 kinds are classified in the genus Coleophora . So far , 569 species and subspecies have been described throughout Europe , of which 221 species occur in Central Europe . Their main area of distribution is the Holarctic .

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 4 to 24 millimeters. They have a slender and long body and their wings are very long compared to their width, in some species the wings are over nine times longer than wide. The wing color is sometimes shiny metallic, otherwise monochrome or striped lengthways. Their antennae , thread-like in both sexes, are 0.7 to 1.5 times longer than their forewings. They have no point eyes ( ocelli ). Their two-part maxillary palps have receded, their three-part labial palps are long and curved. They have a fully developed proboscis that is scaled at the base. Both the fore and the hind wings have long fringes. The hind wings are either pointed or with a slightly rounded tip. They are usually much narrower than the fore wings and never reach their width.

The front wings have 9, 10 or 11 wing veins with two anal veins (1b and 1c). The 5th and 8th veins are missing, with some also the 4th or 3rd and 4th veins. The hind wings have 7 to 9 veins with one or two anal veins (1b or 1a and 1b)

Way of life

The imagoes sit obliquely erected in its rest position, so that the wings, the top of the head and the elongated forward sensing a line form.

The young caterpillars live as miners in the leaves or needles of their forage plants. They eat a wide range of different single-furrowed dicotyledonous trees, shrubs and herbs, a few feed on sweet grass ( Poaceae), sour grass (Cyperaceae) and rush family (Juncaceae). Older caterpillars spin a protective housing made of plant parts around their bodies. Depending on the type, this sack is designed differently. These caterpillars only stick their heads through the opening of the sack and penetrate a hole in the leaf or needle in order to eat it out from the inside without crawling into it all the way. During their growth they have to renew their shell again and again.

Systematics

In Europe, the Coleophoridae family is represented by five genera. The number of species within the genera also relates to Europe:
