The Saint-Marcel metro station is an underground station on line 5 of the Paris Métro .

location

The station is located in the Quartier de la Salpêtrière in the 13th arrondissement of Paris . It lies alongside the Boulevard de l'Hôpital south of the confluence of the Rue des Wallons.

Surname

The name is given by the nearby Boulevard Saint-Marcel. The "holy" Marcellus of Paris (fr: Saint Marcel de Paris) was bishop of the city in the early 5th century . The best known of his miracles was the taming and driving away of a dragon . His relics are kept in Notre Dame Cathedral .

History and description

The station went into operation on June 2, 1906 with the opening of Line 5. This initially ran from the terminus at Place d'Italie for only 1555 m to the Gare d'Orléans station (since 1930: Gare d'Austerlitz ).

The station has side platforms under an elliptical vaulted ceiling on two parallel tracks. Its white plastered side walls follow the curvature of the ellipse. It has the original Parisian standard length of 75 m, sufficient for five-car trains. Immediately to the north of the station, the line leaves the tunnel and leads over a ramp to the Gare d'Austerlitz high station.

The two entrances are on both sides of the Boulevard de l'Hôpital south of the junction with the Rue des Wallons. The décor of the eastern entrance was designed by Hector Guimard in the Art Nouveau style. The western entrance is marked by a mast with a yellow “M” in a double circle.

vehicles

The Sprague-Thomson trains on line 5 were replaced from 1978 by vehicles from the MF 67 series , which were followed by MF 01 trains from 2011 .
