Gare d'Austerlitz is a transfer station of the Paris Métro . It is served by lines 5 and 10 . With around 24,000 passengers a day, in 2004 it was one of the twenty most heavily frequented underground stations on the Métro. You can change to the S-Bahn- like RER C at its underground station Gare d'Austerlitz and to the above-ground long-distance train station of the same name, the most important station for TER and Corail trains in the direction of Tours , Limoges , Orléans and Toulouse .

location

The metro station is located on the border of the Quartier du Jardin des Plantes in the 5th arrondissement with the Quartier de la Salpêtrière in the 13th arrondissement of Paris . The elevated station of line 5 cuts through the station concourse of the long-distance station at a right angle, the station of line 10 is underground on the west side of the building.

Surname

It is named after the long-distance train station Paris-Austerlitz, the sixth largest train station in the city. In the Battle of Austerlitz in what is now the Czech Republic , Napoleon Bonaparte defeated an alliance of Austrian and Russian troops on December 2, 1805.

Initially, the station was called "Gare d'Orléans" like the long-distance train station. Orléans, 111 km away, was initially the terminus of the Paris – Bordeaux line . On October 15, 1930, it was renamed Gare d'Orléans-Austerlitz, and since April 25, 1985, the underground station has had its current name.

history

The station went into operation on June 2, 1906 with the opening of line 5, which for the first few weeks was limited to the section from Place d'Italie to Gare d'Orléans. On 13 July 1906, she became a transit station when the track over the Seine bridge Viaduc d'Austerlitz to "Place Mazas" (June 1, 1916 Quai de la Rapée ) has been extended. The last expansion of the station was the opening of the line 10 station on July 12, 1939.

The station of line 5 lies across the axis of the tracks of the long-distance train station, which meanwhile end to the southeast. Unlike the other stations on the line, it is 90 m long. Its central section rests on two parallel viaducts with a span of 50 m each.

Line 10 stops underground and has its eastern end point there. Your station is under an elliptical, white tiled ceiling vault. It is 75 m long, has curved side walls and side platforms on two main tracks. To the south of the station there is a double-track turning and parking facility.

The Sprague-Thomson trains on line 5 were replaced from 1978 by vehicles from the MF 67 series , which were followed by MF 01 trains from 2011 .

Line 10 is used by the MF 67 series. Between 1975 and 1994 trains of the MA series ran there , before that also Sprague-Thomson cars.
