The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Martin is located in Langrune-sur-Mer in the Calvados department in Normandy . It was built in the 13th century and dedicated to St. Martin of Tours . The church is assigned to the diocese of Bayeux . The church building has been a listed building since 1840.

history

The beginning of the construction of the church is not certain, but could already be in the 12th century. According to inscriptions inside the church, the completion is given as 1298. According to Arcisse de Caumont , the portal, the nave , the choir and the first level of the steeple date from the 13th century.

The church tower has been struck by lightning several times over the centuries, with the steeple being destroyed in 1640. In Caumont's 1846 drawing of the church, both the four dormers and the four pinnacles of the church tower, which were not restored until 1904 to 1907, are missing . During the landing in Normandy , the church was damaged again.

In 1932 the remains of St. Helidor , who died around 820, were transferred to St. Martin, which also made the church a place of pilgrimage. The damage from the Second World War was repaired in 1968.

architecture

The church has the outline of a Latin cross . The west-facing main portal is covered with a gable roof and a semicircular opening.

The end of the choir consists of a five-sided apse . Above the crossing , only the first floor of the church tower is visible inside. Seen from the outside, the tower continues in very high double windows, the roof spire is decorated with eight tower battlements.
