history

In 1609 the place Megrin was created at St David's Point . In 1721 the Catholic parish of Megrin was re-established by the French . In 1747, Megrin in St David was one of the six churches and parishes in Grenada. In the Fedon Conflict (Fédon's Rebellion, 1795–96) there was a battle at the church when the English troops stayed in the church overnight. It was destroyed and never rebuilt.

Since the 1950s, St David's became the base of Eric Gairy, who came from Aruba and found support in St. David's Parish for his "Sky Red" rebellion against British rule, which in 1974 finally led to the independence of Grenada.

The Parish was also the site of the New Jewel Movement , which culminated in the Grenada Revolution on March 13, 1979. Theodore "Teddy" Victor , Sebastian Thomas , Unison Whiteman and Wally Jeremiah , who were dissatisfied with the opposition Grenada National Party (GNP) under Herbert Blaize , decided to organize a grassroots movement and mobilize the "masses of Grenada". For this they used their magazine The New Jewel .

The confrontation with the Gary regime was sparked primarily by the sale of the popular LaSagesse beach , which had been sold to the British Lord Brownslow and which denied access to the beach for the locals.

economy

In the sparsely populated part of the island, ecotourism is becoming increasingly important. The cultivation of fruit and sugar cane is still the most important industry.
