Saki Igarashi (born January 24, 2000 ) is a Japanese wrestler . In 2018 she took first place in the weight class up to 55 kg at the Asian championships and also won the world championships in the U 23 age group.
Career
Saki Igarashi comes from a wrestling family and trains at the Japanese Wrestling Association's performance center in Tokyo. Her sister Miho Igarashi is one of the top Japanese wrestlers in the weight class up to 50 kg body weight.
In 2015 she took part for the first time in an international championship, the Junior World Championship for the Cadets age group in Sarajevo. There she took 2nd place in the weight class up to 49 kg.
In 2016 she was Asian Junior Champion (Cadets) in Taichung in the weight class up to 52 kg ahead of Mongolian Chulan Balduuyang.
In 2017 she was second behind the 2016 world champion Mayu Mukaida at the Japanese women's championship in the weight category up to 55 kg .
In February 2018 she was Asian champion in the weight class up to 55 kg ahead of Oh Hyemin from South Korea. That was her first major success at an international women's championship, which she achieved at the age of 17. In June 2018 she took second place behind Mayu Mukaida in the Meiji Cup in Tokyo, where the best Japanese wrestlers compete for the starting positions for the World Championships and, in Olympic years, for the Olympic Games. In September 2018 she became Junior World Champion (age group Juniors) in the same weight class ahead of the Mongolian Chaliunna Bayaraa. In November 2018 she also became world champion in the U23 age group. In doing so, she defeated her opponents, some five years older than her, namely Domenique Parrisch from the United States, Chelsey Sicard from Canada, Elena Heike Brugger from Germany and Ouyang Junling from China. In December 2018, she again became the Japanese women's runner-up in the weight class up to 55 kg behind Nao Taniyama.
At the 2019 Asian Championships in Xi'an, China, Saki Igarashi lost in the final of the weight class up to 55 kg against the Chinese Xie Mengyu. In June 2019, she won the Meiji Cup in Tokyo, the decisive tournament for the nomination for the world championship in the same weight class ahead of Kana Higashikawa. At the 2019 Junior World Championships in Tallinn, she started in the weight class up to 55 kg. She lost there in the semifinals against Jekaterina Werbina from Russia just on points, but then secured a bronze medal with a win over Park Eunyoung, South Korea
