Salda muelleri is a bug fromthe bank bug family (Saldidae).

features

The bugs are 4.8 to 7.1 millimeters long. The relatively large bank bugs of the genus Salda are black in color and have almost non-overlapping hemielytres . Determination is difficult. Salda muelleri differs from the other species of the genus in that its hemielytres are only lightly and irregularly dotted and hairless, which makes them look rather shiny. Salda morio almost always only has very shortened (microptere) unpunctured hemielytres and Salda littoralis has a fine down on the hemielytres. The species mostly has short (brachyptere) hemielytres and is rarely fully winged (macropter).

distribution and habitat

The species is common in Europe, but is absent in the south. In the east, the distribution extends over the mountains of Eastern Europe to Central Asia and Siberia. In Germany, the boreomontane distribution is indicated: It occurs in the north German lowlands and in the low mountain ranges, such as the Harz to Thuringia and Saxony and in the southwest (Black Forest) and in the Alps. Since the rare species is easily confused with Salda morio , the distribution is uncertain. The species is common in the UK, south-east and north of England, and Scotland, and is not common. Similar to Salda littoralis , the edges of freshwater and acidic wetlands such as raised bogs and moor meadows as well as salty habitats such as the seashore and banks of brackish water are populated.

Way of life

The adults appear from the end of June until late autumn, so it can be assumed that the eggs will overwinter.
