Saleh Meki

Saleh Meki (* 1948 in Gulie , Maekel region , † October 2, 2009 in Gindae ) was an Eritrean politician .

biography

Meki, a member of the Eritrean People's Liberation Front ( EPLF ) and later the Popular Front for Democracy and Justice ( PFDJ ), went to the USA in 1972 and was a representative of the PFDJ in San Francisco for some time . After studying medicine there, he worked as an anesthesiologist and also acquired US citizenship . In 1991 he returned to his home country.

After Eritrea gained independence on May 24, 1993, President Isayas Afewerki made him Minister of Marine Resources and Fisheries. After a cabinet reshuffle in 1997, he served as Minister of Health for twelve years and as such carried out some reforms in the health sector.

Most recently, President Afewerki reappointed him as Minister for Marine Resources in April 2009. As such, it was also his responsibility to train his successor as Minister of Health, Amna Nurhussein, and to temporarily head the Ministry of Sports. In addition, because of his experience with the United States , he also advised Foreign Minister Osman Saleh Mohammed .

Meki died of a heart attack while he was still in office and was buried on October 6, 2009 in the Asmara Martyrs Cemetery.
