action

The Cinderella plot is set in New York at the time the musical was made.

The homeless but pretty orphan Sally gets a job as a dishwasher at the Alley Inn nightclub in Greenwich Village through the care of the rich widow Mrs. Ten Broek. There she befriends the waiter Connie, who is the exiled Grand Duke of Czechogovinia. Long Island millionaire Richard Farquar intends to hold a ball in honor of the Grand Duke.

When Farquar's son Blair visits the club, he falls in love with Sally. Connie, who knows something about dance, becomes aware of Sally's talent and arranges for her to perform at the Alley Inn. In the audience is the theater agent Otis Hooper with his fiancée Rosie Rafferty. He would like to get married, but has money problems - on top of that, his prima ballerina Madame Nookerova cancels her appearance for Farquars Ball. Otis got the idea that Sally could pose as the Nookerova.

While Connie tells Mrs. Ten Broek about his lost homeland on the ball evening, Sally's dance number impresses the company. She gets an engagement with the Ziegfeld Follies and eventually becomes their star. As a result of this, Otis is financially restructured. For the finale, Connie Ten, Otis Rosie and Blair Sally marries.

filming

The film version with slightly different plot and score was made in 1929 for First National Pictures . In Germany the film was released under the title Cilly ; the main role again played Marilyn Miller.
