Salmanus (also Salman or Salmon ) was a hermit and missionary from the circle of the Breton hermit Jodokus . He lived in the 7th century.

Life

The Legend of Salmanus was from what is now Asturias originating commander and apparently noble descent. After he had decided against a military life, Salmanus decided to go as the companion of St. Jodokus to make a pilgrimage to Rome. In Dobach , a district of Würselen , Salmanus decided to lead people to Christianity as a hermit .

Salmanus as patron saint and worship of Salmanus

Apparently the people of his time already sought help from him, in particular they hoped for help with chest, lung and cough diseases through the prayer of Salmanus. Salmanus himself died of a cough disease. A chapel was later built southwest of Dobach, which became a place of pilgrimage. Among other things, due to the intensive mining in the Aachen district and the diseases often associated with it (e.g. dust lung ), the grave of Saint Salmanus became an important place of pilgrimage, where help was requested with ailments of this kind. The St. Salmanus Chapel was demolished in 1818. A wayside cross erected at the beginning of the 20th century, the Salmanus Cross, still stands today. Until the middle of the 20th century, a high mass was read for Salmanus on the 1st Sunday in May .
