Salomon Corrodi (born April 23, 1810 in Fehraltorf , † July 4, 1892 in Como ) was a Swiss painter and draftsman who worked in Rome .

Life

He was the 10th child of the Protestant pastor of Fehraltorf, Salomon Corrodi. At the age of 22 he came to Rome, where he joined the German artist community around Joseph Anton Koch , Johann Christian Reinhart and Franz Ludwig Catel . Under their influence he trained to become a successful artist and watercolorist. His preferred motifs include vedutas from Rome and the city's surroundings, as well as pictures of Venice. His works were bought by Tsar Nicholas and the English royal family. His success enabled him, together with his wife, to keep an open house, especially for artists. So on Thursday evening meetings of Swiss artists took place at his place - mostly painters, but also the sculptors Ferdinand Schlöth and Achilles Schlöth . He was friends with Bertel Thorwaldsen . He went on trips, a. a. to Munich and London. At the age of eighty-two he died in Como on a trip to Switzerland. He found his final resting place on the Cimitero acattolico on Monte Testaccio in Rome. His sons Arnold and Hermann followed in his footsteps as painters.

In 1845 he co-founded the German Artists' Association in Rome and was its president from 1853 to 1856. In 1875 he became a founding member of the Società degli Acquarellisti in Rome, from 1888 he was an honorary member of the Accademia di San Luca there .
