1996 went from the synergy of Telecom Research Center of the University of Applied Sciences degree programs and the Institute for Information Economy and New Media , the Techno-Z R & D  produced GmbH. Even then, the research topics related to information and communication technologies were interdisciplinary and broadly diversified: technological research and development both on the basis of the Internet (telecommunications, quality of service , testing and measurement, protocols and algorithms) and in the content area (content Engineering, workflow optimization, middleware, e-commerce, hypermedia and knowledge management), accompanied by social and economic research on the transformation of the information and knowledge society.

On January 19, 2000, the state of Salzburg became the sole owner of the research company. Since this year, what is now the state research company has been called Salzburg Research Forschungsgesellschaft . In 2015, the research company celebrated its 15th anniversary as a state research company.

Research lines

The research lines of the Salzburg Research Forschungsgesellschaft concentrate on topics related to the Future Internet :

  • ANC - Advanced Networking Center: (network technologies, monitoring, software-defined networking)
  • MOWI - Mobile and Web-based Information Technologies (Location Based Services, Location Analytics)
  • IoT - Internet of Things (virtualization, functional modeling, maintenance)
  • iLab - Innovation Lab (methods for the early innovation phase, innovation scouting)

The research company is involved in numerous research projects at EU level, for example:

  • For example, IDIRA is developing a system of technologies and guidelines for optimal resource planning and implementation of international disaster relief;
  • IKS is developing an open source technology platform for knowledge management, expanding the range of semantic CMS technology and serving as a cooperation and software development hub for the semantic CMS community;
  • ICardea is an intelligent platform for monitoring patients with heart implants.
  • SCISSOR Development of a framework for security monitoring and elimination of discovered security problems.
  • Nimble develops a cloud-based open-source software platform for B2B applications. Nimble flows through the eFactory project together with three other basic platforms into a "Smart Factory Ecosystem".
  • Digibus® Austria pursues the goal of researching and testing methods, technologies and models that allow the reliable and safe operation of automated shuttles in an intermodal regional mobility system.
  • 5G-MLab develops methods to measure the reliability of wireless networks.
  • Fit4AAL is an expandable Plug & Play solution, through which the following generations, more familiar with technology, can become physically "fit (ter)" on the one hand and "fit for the use" of supporting technologies on the other.
  • SimpliCITY is working on the increased use of regional sustainability services. This is implemented with the help of digital and technology-based incentive methods and tools and affects the three areas of bicycle mobility, production and consumption of regional products, and social inclusion services.
  • The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute "Digital Health and Prevention" aims to provide long-term, sustainable, efficient and effective support for HKE patients in making healthy lifestyle changes using new digital technologies.

Salzburg Research also coordinated the competence centers Salzburg NewMediaLab (SNML) (2000-2013) in the field of new media as well as ANET (2006-2009), e-motion (2009-2011) in the field of e-tourism and, since November 2018, digital motion ( 2018–2022) in the field of sport, fitness and well-being.
