The Lower Saxony State Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (LAVES) is a higher state authority in the business area of ​​the Lower Saxony Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection and employs around 1,000 people.

Structural classification

LAVES was founded with the aim of identifying health risks for consumers at an early stage and of combating them effectively and in good time. Since July 1, 2001, the former state examination offices for food and veterinary diagnostics have been merged in the state office. In 2003 the newly founded animal feed institute followed and in 2004 the institute for apiculture in Celle was added.

The Lower Saxony Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Consumer Protection and Regional Development defines the consumer protection policy principles for the state . The consumer protection tasks are coordinated in LAVES. The local food control and veterinary authorities carry out this on site. The specialist departments advise the responsible authorities in the districts on issues relating to food monitoring, animal disease control and the removal of animal by-products, animal welfare and inland fishing. They control veterinary house pharmacies, the implementation of the antibiotic minimization concept in animal husbandry, the feed industry, organic farming as well as compliance with quality standards, quality characteristics and trade classes for agricultural products.

education

The LAVES trains chemical laboratory technicians , biology laboratory technicians , official veterinarians , food chemists , food inspectors and animal farmers (specialist in beekeeping) and administrative clerks.

Quality management

The LAVES works according to the quality management system introduced in 2006 on the basis of the uniform quality management system in Lower Saxony organizations of consumer health protection - EQUINO . The state office is certified according to the quality management standard DIN EN ISO 9001 .
