The Salzburg Bach Society was founded in 1976 by Albert Hartinger as the Salzburg Music Forum . The intention was to offer the early music scene in Salzburg , which was not very lively at the time, a forum in which they could exchange ideas and make their first podium appearances. The main focus of the music performed is that of the namesake Johann Sebastian Bach and his sons, but also that of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart .

A particular concern of the Bach Society is not to let the many other baroque composers such as HIF Biber and Georg Muffat who worked at the Salzburg court, but also others who were connected with Salzburg, be forgotten.

In 1980 the concert series for children and young people, music for children and connoisseurs , today music for young people and in 1983 the Salzburg Bach Choir as a concert choir of the Bach Society was founded. Howard Arman was hired to manage the company and held it until 2000. Today the choir is its own association, which has remained a partner and repeatedly gives concerts in the Bach cycle . In 1987 the Collegium Vocale Salzburg was founded. The ensemble forms the chamber and concert choir of the Salzburg Bach Society .

Well-known artists such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt , Frans Brüggen , Trevor Pinnock , Ton Koopman , Franz Welser-Möst , Benjamin Schmid , Julian Rachlin , the Arnold Schönberg Choir, the Hilliard Ensemble and many others celebrated their debut or their first podium appearance in Salzburg with the Bach Society .

In 2008, the society organized the 83rd international Bach Festival under the motto Bach as a guest in Salzburg on behalf of the New Bach Society Leipzig eV

In 2012 the Salzburg Bach Society celebrates its 35th anniversary, which meanwhile organizes early music performances all year round in Austria. Numerous scientific publications, radio and TV recordings as well as CD productions complement the company's artistic work.
