Howard Arman (born April 30, 1954 in London ) is an English choir and orchestra conductor and composer . From 1983 to 2000 he directed the Salzburg Bach Choir and from 1998 to 2013 the MDR-Rundfunkchor Leipzig. Since 2015 he has been artistic director of the Bavarian Radio Choir .

Life

Howard Arman studied at Trinity College of Music in London. Already during his studies he got to know the historical performance practice better. In 1980 he was a guest with the British Choir Abroad at the Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte Festival in Montepulciano, Italy, where he met the composer Hans Werner Henze . With this he then realized some projects.

He was artistically active in several European cities as well as in Jerusalem. In Germany and Austria he worked a. a. with the radio choirs of NDR, SWR, ORF and RIAS. From 1983 to 2000 he directed the Salzburger Bachchor (the Salzburg Bach Society ), with which he made his debut in 1995 at the opening concert of the Salzburg Festival . In 1986 he also took over the artistic direction of the Wilten Boys' Choir in Innsbruck. In 1991 he founded the Innsbrucker Capellknaben with some choir singers. From 1991 to 1996 he was artistic director of the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music . In 1991 he made his debut at the Wiener Musikverein .

Through his work, he made contact with the Schütz Academy in the Heinrich Schütz House in Bad Köstritz. Between 1993 and 1996 he trained the Haendelfestspielorchester Halle on historical instruments. The Halle composer Thomas Buchholz created the Chamber Symphony VIII "Ellipse" (1995) for him , which Arman premiered in Stuttgart in 1996 with the Festival Orchestra.

From 1998 to 2013 Arman was the successor to Gert Frischmuth as conductor and artistic director of the MDR radio choir in Leipzig. In 2000 he premiered the commissioned work Orplid: Kein Ort - Nirgendwo (1998) by Thomas Buchholz with the choir in the Leipzig Gewandhaus . For the 25-year pontificate of Pope John Paul II , he was invited to the Vatican in 2003 with the ensemble of the MDR , where he conducted Beethoven's 9th Symphony , which was broadcast live . In 2004 he conceived the series Nachtgesang in which he the choral work Endless Light by Laurence Traiger brought premiered. For the 2010/11 season he succeeded Eric Solén as General Music Director (GMD) of the Thuringian Theater & Philharmonic in Altenburg-Gera. As such, he directed Purcell's Dido and Aeneas , Mozart's Die Zauberflöte and Wagner's Tristan und Isolde .

The Lucerne Theater appointed Arman as music director for three years from the 2011/12 season, in which capacity he conducted the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra . He realized Handel's Hercules , Rossini's La Cenerentola , Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro , Bizet's Carmen and Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos as well as the dance theater Metamorphosen . In 2013 he made his debut at the Lucerne Festival . In 2014 he premiered Johannes Maria Staud's opera Die Antilope (2013/14) with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra . Arman was also responsible for productions at various opera houses in Europe. a. cooperated with the Catalan theater group La Fura dels Baus .

In 2002 he made his debut with the Bavarian Radio Chorus . In 2015 he premiered the commissioned composition of the choir The Cries of London for solos, choir and string instruments in the Prinzregententheater in Munich with the Munich Court Orchestra . Since 2016 Howard Arman has succeeded Peter Dijkstra as artistic director of the ensemble in Munich. He sat u. a. Handel's An Occasional Oratorio , Verdi's Quattro pezzi sacri , Rossini's Stabat mater , Bach's Christmas Oratorio and Monteverdi's Vespers are on the program.

He was a lecturer for early music at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. In 2010 he became visiting professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna . In 2012 he was appointed to the Lucerne School of Music as the successor to Ralf Weikert .

Awards

For the reorganization of the Handel Festival Orchestra Halle as part of the production of Handel's Orlando opera , he was awarded the Handel Prize of the City of Halle in 1996. His recordings of choral works in 2002 ( Rachmaninov's The Great Evening and Morning Praise ) and 2005 ( Graun's Der Tod Jesu ) with the MDR-Rundfunkchor Leipzig (and the MDR-Sinfonieorchester ) received the Echo Klassik . In 2006 he was portrayed as a conductor, arranger and composer at the Hallische Musiktage , and he presented his own works. The recording of Schönberg's Gurre-Lieder was nominated as best choral performance for the Grammy Awards 2008 . In 2009 he was awarded the City Seal of the City of Salzburg for his services to the Festival City of Salzburg . In 2011 he received the Saxon Mozart Prize. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary (2019) of the Nachtgesang series , he was appointed first honorary conductor of the MDR radio choir.
