The Handel Festival Orchestra Halle is a special ensemble for early music from Halle (Saale) founded in 1993 , which plays on historical instruments and maintains the baroque and Handel . The musicians belong to the Staatskapelle Halle concert and opera orchestra with a modern cast .

history

With the increasing national importance of the Halle Handel Festival in the 1950s, the theater orchestra was renamed the Handel Festival Orchestra (later the Halle Opera House Orchestra ) in 1957/67 . In 1959 the orchestra formed the collegium instrumentale hall , which from the 1970s was under the direction of the first concert master Manfred Otte .

In 1993, the special ensemble for early music , the Handel Festival Orchestra , was created, which was based at the Halle Consort . It played on original and replica historical instruments. The profile of the orchestra was developed by the permanent English guest conductor Howard Arman . From 2007 to 2019 Bernhard Forck was artistic director of the orchestra.

The orchestra participates in opera productions every year and gives the festive opening concert of the Handel Festival. Operas by Georg Friedrich Händel , Christoph Willibald Gluck , Claudio Monteverdi and Georg Philipp Telemann were designed. With its own subscription series Handel at home and Handel's treasures - music in dialogue , the Handel Festival Orchestra regularly plays in the auditorium in the lion building of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and the Handel House Foundation . There is also a close cooperation with the Stadtsingechor zu Halle . The ensemble u. a. in Berlin, Dresden, Göttingen, Hamburg, Karlsruhe, Cologne, Magdeburg and Leipzig. So it happened u. a. at the Magdeburg Telemann Festival , the Göttingen International Handel Festival and the Leipzig Bach Festival . It was also a guest in Belgium, France, Italy, Austria, Spain and South Korea. The Handel Festival Orchestra worked together with international musicians such as Sergio Azzolini , Fabio Biondi , Marcus Creed , Paul Goodwin , Mayumi Hirasaki , Wolfgang Katschner , Nicholas McGegan , Paul McCreesh , Petra Müllejans , Enrico Onofri , Michael Schneider and Andreas Spering . Under the conductors Howard Arman, Clemens Flämig , Michael Hofstetter , Anton Steck and David Timm, there were several CD and DVD productions with works by Johann Sebastian Bach , Georg Friedrich Handel, Christoph Schaffrath and Pietro Castrucci . Soloists were u. a. Nikolay Borchev , Christoph Genz , Axel Köhler , Myrsini Margariti and Samuel Mariño .

In 1997 the orchestra was awarded the Handel Prize of the City of Halle for making music on historical instruments .
