The holdings are based on the former private collection of Gabriele Folk-Stoi and Hugo Folk. In addition to toys made of wood , clay , pewter , dolls and dollhouses, the paper theaters are a special focus of the toy museum.

The museum was opened in 1978 and houses the largest collection in Austria on the history of European toys over the past 250 years. The toy museum was reopened in 2011 after a building renovation and a complete redesign of the exhibition areas.

The toy museum is part of the Salzburg Museum (formerly Salzburg Museum Carolino-Augusteum - SMCA).
