Samuel "Sam" English (born August 18, 1908 in Crivolea , County Antrim , † April 1967 in West Dunbartonshire ) was a Northern Irish football player who in his career for the Glasgow Rangers , for Liverpool FC , for Queen of the South and for Hartlepool United played.

He was born in Crivolea , a village in Aghadowey, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. 1924 his family moved to Scotland in the town of Clydebank . There he worked for the John Brown & Company shipyard for some time .

During the 1930s he played for the York Athletic Juniors and the Glasgow Rangers . With the Rangers he is the record holder for the most goals in a season (44 goals in the 1931/32 season).

But his career was overshadowed by a cruel event. In the derby between Celtic Glasgow and the Glasgow Rangers, 22-year-old Celtics goalkeeper John Thomson jumped for the ball and hit English with his head in the knee. The head injuries were so severe that Thomson died a few hours later in hospital.

Because of the overwhelming pressure from the Scottish fans, he moved to England for Liverpool , from there to Queen of the South and later to Hartlepools United .

After being exposed to such situations in the game, he hung up his football boots when he was only 28 years old.

English died in a hospital in West Dunbartonshire at the age of 58. A nurse said he looked "like an old man". It is unclear whether this was due to the accident or the neurological muscle disease from which he eventually died.
