John Thomson (born January 28, 1909 in Kirkcaldy , Scotland , † September 5, 1931 in Glasgow ) was a Scottish football goalkeeper for Celtic Glasgow and the Scottish national football team , who died in a collision during a football game.

He grew up in the mining town of Cardenden in County Fife . Thomson was committed to Celtic Glasgow in 1926 at the age of 17 due to his strong goalkeeping performances, where he won a regular place early on.

At 18 he was the first time in a game against FC Dundee for the first team of Celtic Glasgow in goal; the game ended 2-1 for Celtic. He won the Scottish FA Cup in his short career with Celtic in 1927 and 1931 . He guarded the goal in four games for the Scottish national team, with many observers predicting a great career for him.

In an old firm duel against arch rivals Glasgow Rangers on September 5, 1931, Thomson dived for a ball and collided with the knee of Rangers striker Sam English . Thomson suffered a fracture of the base of the skull and passed away in hospital the same day without regaining consciousness. 40,000 people attended his funeral in Cardenden; his teammates carried the coffin.

His grave in Fife is still a pilgrimage site for Celtic fans to this day. Supporters of Celtic Glasgow consider Thomson to be the best goalkeeper Celtic has ever had and refer to him as "The Prince of Goalkeepers". He has his own anthem dedicated to the Celtic fans, "The John Thomson Song".
