Sam Morris

Samson "Sam" Uriah Morris (* 1908; † June 1976) was an educator , anti- colonialist and human rights activist from Grenada , who came to London in 1939 and was vice chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality there in the 1970s .

Life

Morris was born in St Andrew's , Grenada in 1908 . He received part of his education in Barbados at Codrington College . In 1939 he sailed to Great Britain and served in the British Army . He then became active in the League of Colored Peoples - which was founded by Harold Moody and fought for racial equality and civil rights in Britain and worldwide. Morris became the organization's general secretary in 1945. Morris has participated in various BBC programs , including Calling the West Indies and Caribbean Voices .

During World War II he worked as a liaison officer for Learie Constantine in the Welfare Department of the Colonial Office . In 1953, Morris left Britain en route to Africa and worked for Radio Ghana before working as Private Secretary and Press Officer for Kwame Nkrumah in Ghana . In 1967 he returned to Great Britain. There he worked as Development Officer for the Midlands with the National Committee for Commonwealth Immigrants . He later became Assistant High Commissioner for Grenada and Vice Chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality . He lived in Hammersmith and was a member of the Hammersmith and Fulham Council for Racial Equality . He died in Fulham , London in June 1976 .

legacy

There is a Sam Uriah Morris Society that organizes exhibitions on black history in East London.
