Sameref is the ancient Egyptian name of a god of the dead who has beenassociated with the kingsince the 3rd dynasty . With the cult of Osiris ,which appeared a little later, the role of the deity Sameref refers to Horus , son of Osiris. The mythological roots probably go back to predynastic times .

Mythological connections

With the transition from the second to the third dynasty, Sameref is considered to be the embodiment of the deceased king ( Pharaoh ), who as the son of Horus loves his father Horus. In the Middle Kingdom , Sameref is the deity who counts all the hearts of the deceased. With the beginning of the New Kingdom , Sameref appears in his function as Horus before the Ninth of Heliopolis to lead the deceased to the great council of gods ( Djadjat ).

During the later period , Sameref is the equation of the Horus son Qebechsenuef . In Greco-Roman times , Sameref is identified with, among others, Imhotep , Anubis and Horus, who, as sons, love their father. In this context, the deity Sameref was understood as the son of Re .

In the New Kingdom Sameref is depicted as a human deity with a youthful lock and panther skin cloak as a youthful Horus. He holds the right hind paw of the panther skin with his left hand.

Sameref was often depicted as a partner deity of Junmutef since the New Kingdom . From this connection, the new deity Horus Iunmutef arose in the further course of the New Kingdom .
