Georg Weishaupt collection

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Georg Weishaupt Collection is a private collection of East Asian porcelain art . It was built by the Berlin entrepreneur Georg Weishaupt (1906–2004) and is now part of the collections of the Museum of Asian Art in Berlin.

collection

The Berlin entrepreneur Georg Weishaupt was the son of an art dealer. Over a period of around 30 years he collected art porcelain from East Asia. The focus of his collection, which contains around 900 pieces in total, is on porcelain from China . The timeframe on which Weishaupt focused particularly in its final years begins with the late Qing dynasty from the end of the 18th century, includes in particular the time before and after the establishment of the Chinese Republic in 1911 and extends into the middle of the 20th century. Georg Weishaupt was one of the first to devote himself to this previously under-appreciated collecting area. The collection also deals with special subjects such as the export ceramics from China's “porcelain capital” Jingdezhen for the Japanese market from the late phase of the Ming dynasty (early 17th century). It also contains some Japanese porcelain and other East Asian antiques. Over the years, however, Weishaupt sold more or less large groups of its collection on the international art market.

presentation

As early as 1975, Weishaupt showed pieces from its collection in an exhibition at the Museum of East Asian Art. In the summer and autumn of 1987, the Museum für Kunsthandwerk in Frankfurt am Main and the Museum für Kunsthandwerk Berlin presented parts in a special exhibition. Porcelain from the Georg Weishaupt collection, which he had given to the Museum for East Asian Art (today: Museum for Asian Art) in Berlin-Dahlem, was shown in a touring exhibition in 1996/1997, which was held in the Museum for East Asian Art and in the Berlin Museum of Applied Arts and in the Hamburger Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe was on display.
