The Alnarptal (also "Alnarp-Tal"; Swedish Alnarpsfloden , "Alnarp-Strom" or Bärnstensfloden , "Bernsteinstrom") is a glacial valley in the southern Swedish province of Skåne län and the historical province of Skåne .

location

The valley is located in southwest Skåne, in the area southwest of Romeleåsen . There are underground gravel deposits on a route running from southeast to northwest, starting about 16 kilometers west of Ystad near Skivarp in the municipality of Skurup , via Börringe and Klågerup ( municipality of Svedala ), Alnarp ( municipality of Lomma ), to Landskrona and Ven , at a depth of around 30 meters. The valley itself is about 40 meters deep and up to 5 kilometers wide. It was discovered at the beginning of the 20th century by the Swedish geologist Nils Olof Holst (1846–1918).

geology

The special thing about this valley is that it is filled with fossil-rich sediments , between which there is also a considerable amount of Baltic amber . This content has raised the question of the origin of the valley and the origin of the filler material. The discoverer of the valley assumed that it was a river in the water system of the Vistula . Among other things, amber from the Baltic region came to southern Sweden via this river and was deposited here. Investigations in the 1970s using the C14 method showed that these deposits were around 35,000 years old. At that time, the area of today's Baltic Sea was still land-based, so that this finding can be interpreted as an indication of the correctness of the theory put forward by Holst.

Amber washed up after storms on the northeast coast of Zealand comes mainly from the Alnarp valley.
