Collection of coats of arms of different civil states from Nuremberg and other places

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The collection of coats of arms of various civil states in Nuremberg and other places is a compilation of various civil coats of arms and was published in Nuremberg in 1783 . The coat of arms book contains 216 engraved coats of arms on 54 black-and-white boards and was published in six series between 1783 and 1787. In 2010 a new edition was published as a facsimile with a contribution by Richard Dietz .

author

The original book does not contain any information about the author and the publisher is the “Adel Wappen Comptoir”. In some publications Martin Tyroff (1705 - 1758) is named as the author, but since he died in 1758 this cannot be the case. Rather, it is assumed that the author was his son Hermann Tyroff (1742 - 1798) and that the template was engraved in the Tyroff art dealer.

description

The coat of arms collection is one of the Tyroff's coat of arms books and resembles an interim brochure , the volume has the format of 27.5 × 22 cm and is about 1 cm thick. The book comprises a title page , an ex-libris on the inner cover and 54 coats of arms with 4 coats of arms each, the bearers of which are sorted by title and occupation . Of the 54 panels, one panel is dedicated to citizens from Fürth , one panel describes professors from the University of Altdorf near Nuremberg and two panels mention citizens of Coburg . The other 50 panels focus on Nuremberg citizens. The coats of arms do not refer to the family of the bearer of the coat of arms, but are limited to the person. The coats of arms are not colored and there is no text. The work was conceived as a sequel and appeared as follows:

  • Plate 1 - 11 with 11 plates 1783
  • Plate 12 - 30 with 19 plates 1784
  • Plate 31 - 44 with 14 plates 1785
  • Plate 45-48 and 50-52 with 7 plates 1786
  • Plate 49 and 54 with 2 plates 1787
  • Plate 53 with a plate undated

review

"... It seems as if the panels were originally intended to be brought as an appendix to the aristocratic coat of arms… The existence of several mixed editions indicates that Tyroff also offered his coats of arms individually… In many cases, the coats of arms violate the generally accepted rules of Heraldry ... Since there is no information about sources from which the author had drawn, it had to be verified to what extent the correctness of the coat of arms can be proven by other publications. "

- Richard Dietz

After the last edition of Plate 53, the work was not continued, corrected or supplemented, so that it was no longer up-to-date. The attempt to create a complete collection has therefore failed.
