The Samora Machel statue is a bronze sculpture in memory of the Mozambican state founder and long-time chairman of FRELIMO , Samora Machel . The statue, erected in 2011, is located on the Praça da Independência in the center of the Mozambican capital Maputo .

The North Korean construction company Mansudae Overseas Projects from Pyongyang ( North Korea ), which is part of the Mansudae art studio , designed and erected the statue. It has a height of 9 meters, weighs 4.87 tons and is located on a 2.7 meter elevated base, mostly covered with marble , in the middle of the Praça da Independência . The Avenida Samora Machel runs towards the statue, the statue is illuminated at night.

The foundation stone for the redesign of the square and the erection of the statue was laid in October 2006; the statue was inaugurated on October 19, 2011 - on the 25th anniversary of the plane crash in which Machel died - by then President Armando Guebuza . In addition to foreign guests such as the South African President Jacob Zuma , the Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe , the Botswana President Seretse Khama and the former Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda , the population was also invited - while the government media wrote of a large number of recent visitors, the opposition media stated that only a few Maputo residents attended the inauguration ceremony. President Guebuza said that the location was chosen because it was "central" in the city and Machel was introduced to his office on the square.

Machel is shown in a typical, almost fatherly pose with his right index finger raised. In addition, the FRELIMO wears the stylized military uniform. Arlindo Oliveira criticized Machel's stylization in the state-run newspaper Jornal de Notícias and criticized the fact that the statue did not correspond to the founder of the state at all.

In the same place was a statue of the Portuguese colonial governor Joaquim Augusto Mouzinho de Albuquerque from the mid-1940s until independence . There is also a small statue of Samora Machel a few meters away at the entrance to Tunduru Park .
