The fountain is located on the northern part of Kontraktowa Square in the historic Podil district in front of Hostynyj Dwir .

history

The baroque fountain with a pavilion by the architect Ivan Hryhorowytsch-Barskyj ( Іван Григорович Григорович-Барський ) was built on the square between 1748 and 1749 . In the center of the fountain was a wooden sculpture of an angel with a bowl from which the water flowed, and another angel decorated the roof of the pavilion.

In 1808 the half rotten angel sculpture was replaced by a wooden sculpture Samson , who opens the lion's mouth in the style of so-called "bourgeois classicism ". The pavilion was damaged by the fire in Podil in 1811 , but it was renovated again. In 1934 the entire well was demolished. In 1981–1982, the fountain and pavilion were rebuilt in the Ukrainian Baroque style in preparation for the celebration of the 1500th anniversary of the founding of the city of Kiev . The sculpture was modeled after the original figure in the National Art Museum of Ukraine .
