The Cathedral of Samtawissi or short Samtawissi ( Georgian სამთავისის ტაძარი, სამთავისი ; sɑmtʰɑvɪsɪs t'ɑd͡zɑrɪ , sɑmtʰɑvɪsɪ ) is a Georgian Orthodox cathedral in the Georgian region of Shida Kartli , in the Kaspi Municipality , in the same village Samtawissi . It is located on the left bank of the Lechura River .

After a Georgian tradition, the first church in Samtawissi addition to the three other Georgian churches (was Sioni Cathedral , Ertazminda Cathedral , and Zilkani Metechi) by King I. Vakhtang Gorgasali built. The year of construction is assumed to be 472. There are no remains of the first church today. A small church was built in Samtawissi in the 10th to 11th centuries. There is insufficient information about this building in the historical Georgian sources.

The current church was certainly dated by an inscription on a stone above the western gate. The builder of the building is also known from this inscription. According to the inscription, the church was built by Ilarion Samtawneli in 1030. In 1050 he also built some outbuildings of the church complex.

The cathedral was badly damaged in the 15th century. The dome, western gate and arches were overturned. In the 16th century, Samtawissi was renovated by Gaiane and Siaosch Amilachwari . Gaiane was the sister of the King of Imereti Bagrat IV. And Siaosch her son. This renovation was later referred to as the "Second Construction of Samtawissi Cathedral". In 1847 the church was restored again.
