Samthar is located in the district of Jhansi 55 km northeast of the district capital Jhansi . The city was the capital of the former princely state of Samthar .
As a city, Samthar has the status of Nagar Palika Parishad . The city is divided into 25 wards . At the 2011 census, Samthar had 22,455 inhabitants.
