Samuel Carter Hall (born May 9, 1800 in Geneva Barracks near Waterford , Ireland , † March 11, 1889 in London ) was an Irish writer.

Life

Samuel Carter Hall became a lawyer and then devoted himself to literature.

In 1824 he married Anna Marie (née Fielding), who, herself a writer, remained his loyal colleague until she died. He founded the paperback The Amulet in 1825 , which he edited for many years, took over the editing of The New Monthly Magazine in 1830, and founded the Art Journal in 1839 , which has had a considerable influence on the uplift and generalization of taste for the visual arts.

In addition, he published a number of illustrated works, some alone, some with his wife, e. B.

  • Ireland, its scenery, character etc. 1841–1843, 3 volumes.
  • Gems of European art: 1846–1847, 2 parts.
  • The baronial halls: 1848.
  • The Vernon gallery: 1854 a. a.

Most recently he published:

  • A book of memories of great men and great women of the age. 1870.
  • The trial of Sir Jasper. Moral poem, 1873.
  • Rhymes in council. 1881.
  • The retrospect of a long life. 1883, 2 volumes.
