The New Monthly Magazine
The New Monthly Magazine was a British monthly magazine that existed between 1814 and 1884.
history
Henry Colburn and Frederic Shoberl founded The New Monthly Magazine and Universal Register in 1814 as a "hot Tory newspaper" and as a competitor to Sir Richard Phillips' Monthly Magazine .
In April 1819 they published John Polidori's horror novel The Vampyre , the first major prose piece of vampire literature in England , which Polidori wrote at the suggestion of Lord Byron .
In 1821 Colburn gave the magazine a more literary and less political focus under the new title The New Monthly Magazine and Literary Journal . Edited nominally by the poet Thomas Campbell , the practical work was done by Cyrus Redding . The authors include Lady Morgan , Thomas Charles Morgan , Peter George Patmore , Mary Shelley , Charles Lamb , Leigh Hunt , Stendhal , Thomas Noon Talfourd , Letitia Elizabeth Landon , Ugo Foscolo , Richard Lalor Sheil , Mary Russell Mitford , Edward Bulwer , James and Horace Smith and William Hazlitt . Hazlitt's "Table Talk" essays, which first appeared in London Magazine , appeared in the New Monthly from 1821, his essay "The Fight" appeared in 1822, and his series "The Spirits of the Age" was later published along with other essays in the Book The Spirit of the Age reprinted.
In 1829 Charles Knights London Magazine merged with New Monthly and Richard Bentley became Colburn's business partner. After Redding's resignation in 1830, Campbell hired Samuel Carter Hall as editor for a year. In 1831 the writer Edward Bulwer took over as editor and tightened the tenor considerably. Hall, a politically conservative, had remained as editor and differing views on Bulwer's endeavors led to Bulwer's resignation in 1833. Regular contributors now include Catherine Gore , Anna Maria Hall , Felicia Hemans , Caroline Norton , Thomas Haynes Bayley and Edward Hook
In 1837 the magazine was renamed The New Monthly Magazine and Humorist . Now edited by Theodore Hook, it publishes contributions by Leigh Hunt , Douglas William Jerrold , Frederick Marryat , Frances Trollope , Charles Robert Forrester, and William Makepeace Thackeray . After Hook's death in 1841, Thomas Hood was editor until 1843.
Colburn then sold the magazine to William Harrison Ainsworth for £ 2,500 . Ainsworth edited the New Monthly with his cousin William Francis Ainsworth . From 1871 to 1879 William Francis Ainsworth was editor-in-chief.
