Samuel Geoghegan


Samuel Geoghegan (* 1845 in Dublin , † September 4, 1928 ) was an Irish engineer.
life and career
Samuel Geoghegan was a pupil of the schoolmaster Richard Biggs in Devizes , Wiltshire , in 1861, according to the English census of that year . He then completed an apprenticeship at the mechanical engineering company Walter May & Co in Birmingham and then became a technical draftsman at P. and W. MacLelland and Howden & Co in Glasgow . Then he worked as a mechanic at Fawcett, Preston & Co in Liverpool .
In 1869 he moved to Smyrna , Turkey , to work as a mechanic and draftsman for the Ottoman Railway. Two years later he returned to England to work as a mechanic at the Doncaster Locomotive Works on the Great Northern Railway .
In 1871 he went to India to work on the bridge over the Chenab, first as an assistant engineer and later as an executive engineer with responsibility for half of the bridge. He then worked for a year as District Locomotive Superintendent on the railroad near Delhi .
From 1874 he was Chief Engineer at Arthur Guinness & Son in Dublin and held this position until 1901 when he became a consulting engineer for the company. In 1880 he became a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers .
In 1882 he invented and patented a lightweight steam locomotive, in which all moving parts were mounted well above the often dirty floor, and which fit into a given clearance profile with a height of 6 ft (1.8 m). He also invented the Haulage Wagon , an adapter wagon with which the narrow-gauge locomotives could run on broad-gauge tracks .
In 1899 he was finally electrical and mechanical manager of the Guinness brewery . He retired on July 9, 1901 at the age of 56, but held an advisory role until February 11, 1905. After retiring, he ran a private engineering firm at 17 Westland Row in Dublin.
He married in 1876 and had five children. He died on September 4, 1928.
