Samuel Kosciuszko Zook (born May 27, 1821 in Tredyffrin Township, Chester County , Pennsylvania , † July 3, 1863 in Adams County , Pennsylvania) was an American brigadier general in the US Army .

Life

Zook, son of Major David Zook and his wife Eleanor Stephens Zook, was the director of the Washington and New York Telegraph Company . At the beginning of the Civil War he joined the US Army and was Colonel in command of the 57th New York Volunteer Regiment, with which he took part in the Seven Day Battle from June 25 to July 1, 1862 . In November 1862, his regiment was one of the first units of the Potomac Army ( Army of the Potomac ) , which took part in the Battle of Fredericksburg from December 11 to 15, 1862 . In early 1863 he was promoted to Brigadier General and took part in the Battle of Chancellorsville between May 1 and May 4, 1863 , before moving his unit towards Gettysburg at the end of June 1863 . On July 2, 1863, on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg , he led his unit in the attack against the associations of the Confederate States Army of General James Longstreet . He was seriously wounded and died on the following July 3, 1863 in the field hospital at Baltimore Pike in Adams County .
