Samuel Lyon Russell
Samuel Lyon Russell (born July 30, 1816 in Bedford , Bedford County , Pennsylvania , † September 27, 1891 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1853 and 1855 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Samuel Russell was the son of Congressman James McPherson Russell (1786–1870). He attended the public schools in his home country as well as the Bedford Academy . In 1834 he graduated from Washington College in Washington, Pennsylvania. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1837, he began to work in this profession in Bedford. He also served as a district attorney in Bedford County in the 1840s. Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party at the time .
In the 1852 congressional elections , Russell was elected to the 17th constituency of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Democrat Andrew Parker on March 4, 1853 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1854, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1855 . This was shaped by the events leading up to the civil war .
After his time in the US House of Representatives, Samuel Russell practiced as a lawyer again. After the Whigs dissolved, he joined the new Republican Party . In 1873 he took part as a delegate to a constitutional convention in his home state. In Bedford he was a member of both the local council and the school committee. He died on September 27, 1891.
